| Luxury vinyl plank (typical 26 sq ft/carton) | 7 boxes |
How it works
Room area is length times width. The layout waste allowance (10% standard, 15% diagonal) is added, then the total is divided by carton coverage and rounded up to whole boxes. The "typical" coverage for each type is the median of real products verified from manufacturer spec sheets — laminate 19.63, LVP 26, engineered hardwood 29.49, solid hardwood 22 sq ft per carton — but the figure printed on your box always wins: type it into the override field. Underlayment, when a separate layer is needed, comes in standard 100 sq ft rolls.

Questions
How many boxes of flooring do I need for a 12×12 room?
It depends on the material, because there is no standard box size. For a 12×12 room (144 sq ft, 158.4 sq ft with 10% waste): 7 boxes of LVP at the typical 26 sq ft per carton. Typical coverage by type in our dataset — Laminate 19.63 · Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) 26 · Engineered hardwood 29.49 · Solid hardwood 22 sq ft per carton.
Why do boxes of the same flooring line cover different areas?
Carton coverage follows plank width and length. In our verified dataset the same line (Pergo Outlast+) covers 16.12 sq ft per case at 6.14 in plank width and 19.63 sq ft at 7.4 in — so the calculator stores coverage per plank size, never per product line, and always lets you type the figure on your own box.
How much extra should I add for waste?
10% for a standard straight layout and 15% for diagonal or other special patterns. Power Dekor's installation instructions allow 7–10% for waste on standard installs and 10–15% additional material for diagonal or formal patterns.
